The dietary supplement industry in the United States has an estimated value of $28 billion (2010). Aging baby boomers, lifestyle changes, an increased focus on health care, and rising rates of chronic disease (obesity, diabetes, heart health, etc.) continue to fuel the demand for supplements and the growth of the supplement industry. In spite of the recession and poor economic growth, consumers continue to buy supplements- although their purchasing habits may change (buy house brands, limit the number of supplements bought, watch for coupons, sales, etc.) Research has demonstrated steady usage by approximately two-thirds of U.S. adults, for the past seven years. More than 150 million Americans take dietary supplements each year to improve their overall health, fill in nutrient gaps, and because their doctors recommend them.
There are many similarities between the Canadian and American regulations for dietary supplements; however, there are also many differences. This webinar will provide an overview of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 and recent legislative and policy changes of significance to the dietary supplement industry in the United States.
With a population of ~312 million people the United States provides an exciting market opportunity for suppliers of innovative supplements. Explore the opportunities the United States presents for supplement suppliers. Learn the basics of the regulatory framework for dietary supplements and help ensure your products are in compliance when they hit the store shelves.
