The natural health products (NHP) industry in Canada is currently valued at over $3.5 billion. 71% of Canadians have used a natural health product and 77% of Canadians agree that NHP’s can be used to maintain or promote health. The trend towards self-care continues to grow and as the population ages there will be increased demand for preventative healthcare products and increased self-medication.
Under the Natural Health Product Regulations, which came into effect in 2004, a natural health product is defined as: Vitamins and minerals; Herbal remedies; Homeopathic medicines; Traditional medicines such as traditional Chinese medicines; Probiotics; and Other products such as amino acids and essential fatty acids. In order to legally sell a natural health product in Canada, the product must be licensed by Health Canada and have a Natural Product Number (NPN) or DIN-HM (for homeopathic medicines) and be manufactured, packaged, labeled and/or imported by companies with valid Site Licenses. In order to obtain a Product License, the applicant must demonstrate the safety, efficacy and quality of the product and to obtain a Site License the applicant must demonstrate compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices for NHPs.

Learn the basics of the regulatory framework for NHPs in Canada and help ensure your products are in compliance when they hit the shelves.
